“Google is the king of the big five, but it’s only about three times as big as Microsoft,” says Michael Karp, senior vice president of technology for Business Insider.
“If you take a look at the number of people who use Google in a year, you can see that number is actually down.
But that’s because the big players are getting so big.”
Business Insider/CBS News The Big Five”A lot of companies are doing some really interesting things to improve the way they’re doing business, but the big ones like Google, Facebook and Twitter are still dominant in terms of revenue,” he adds.
“The Big Five is what drives those big businesses to be very, very aggressive.”
To help drive those aggressive growth strategies, Karp points to a recent study from research firm IDC, which found that the top three most valuable companies in America are Google, Amazon and Apple.
Google alone makes up 17% of all online advertising revenue.
Microsoft, meanwhile, makes up just 3% of the overall US economy, with Apple and Facebook making up the rest.
According to Karp and other analysts, the big three companies will likely continue to dominate online advertising until the companies can offer more services to users, or find new ways to monetize their sites.
“You’re going to have the big guys that are dominating online ads for a while,” says Karp.
“But it’s going to be increasingly driven by what the consumers want.”
