Batang Baras | Voices of Humans

I am 19 years old. Every time our hands get wounded, I just told them that pain is temporary and it will soon be a prize for your hard work. This is our story. We are at Costa Villa where we play every four in the afternoon. We chose that time because the sun is not too strong anymore by then. We train almost everyday. We play here daily or four times a week. Calisthenics is basically a workout using your own bodyweight. Our group is called as “LABARION”. We live in “La Union” and we play with “Bars”. We combined them and we came up with “Labarion”. We started on July 16, 2017. Okay, we start in head for the warm-up. We count until five. We started with four members. We introduced the sports to several people, and we are now more than 20 members. One of the basic exercises is Pull-ups. We are in the variation of pulling motion. We can do pull-up, five repetitions. That’s one of the basics that you can do. Next is muscle-up, a more advanced pulling exercise. You can do two repetitions. Next is for pushing variations. You can do simple push-up. An important thing in push-up is that your elbows are not flared. Next is a more advanced exercise. A one-hand push-up. Then, we can proceed to core exercise. It’s knee-raise. It’s one of the basic core exercises. Another advance exercise is toe-to-bar. Those exercises are for repetitions and sets, which are all part of the conditioning for Calisthenics. Next is statics. It’s back lever and front lever handstand. Static exercise is considered as isometric exercise. It’s hanging L-shape. We also have pushing statics, like hand stand. Most of the members use Calisthenics as diversion for their problems, like being bullied in school and online game addiction. I was really addicted in playing Mobile Legends. I could not study anymore. I was staying at home just to play. I would sleep at five in the morning and would only woke up at three in the afternoon. I was sleeping late just because of playing online game. I would be awake until one or two in the morning. I would come to school late. I would be sleepy because I was playing the whole night. I stopped attending school because I got addicted with playing in the computer. I realised that I wasted one year. All my batch mates could finish their studies on time. I was invited to join the group for Calisthenics. I slowly stopped playing online game. I really had a bad habit of sleeping late because I couldn’t stop playing online game. I did not care about my studies. I first met Leo. He encouraged me to join the group so I could stop my addiction in playing online games. There were lots of changes, not only in my body, but as well as how I socialise. I think that at their age, they are normally looking for hobbies. Mostly, they would play basketball. But then, if they got tired of it, they would do unnecessary habits. I was smoking before. I thought it’s fun and cool. Before doing Calisthenics, my friends I would steal properties of other people. I was stealing chicks of my neighbor. I would try to ruin motorcycles. Those are the hobbies we enjoyed that we thought were cool. The Head of my School called my Father before, because I was not taking my studies seriously. Then, Paolo asked me to join the group for Calisthenics. I learned to enjoy Calisthenics instead of doing bad activities, like ruining someone’s motorcycle. I will choose Calisthenics over the bad things I was doing before. I used to be the center of bullying before. My classmates would tie my bag. They would punch me while I am writing. It would really give back pain. Sometimes, my things were just thrown away in the toilet. Those were the things I experienced when I was in high school until college. That was an unfortunate experience;
that I was a victim of bullying. I was also a victim of bullying. My classmates would kick me in the stairs during break. I would also just find myself in the toilet being kicked by the students older than me. I got bullied most of the time because I use to be very thin. They looked down at me all the time. My existence and my value in the classroom was almost nothing. Sadly, our group has not joined any competition yet. One of our goals is to join the “King of Bars” in Manila. We could not join a competition before because we were not yet ready and we had conflicts of schedule. We were busy with our school activities. Joining a competition is definitely in our priorities. Calisthenics has helped us a lot. We wanted to return the favor. We want Calisthenics to become a popular sports in the Philippines. In our city alone, Calisthenics is not really a popular sports. So, at least start from here. Our goal is that Calisthenics will be known as an interesting sports here in San Juan City. For the youth today, be wise with your decisions and study hard. Don’t make love life and bad addictions as your problems. Don’t make simple things complicated. Avoid online game addiction. We have some sports that can be our hobby, and can divert our problems in life.
