We’re at the day before your competition. How do you feel? Very well, I’ve just cut 2kg bodyweight and I’m waiting fot the competition. How is your elbow? It’s better, but not as good as a year before… Today your teammate Lénárt (56kg) got a bronze medal. Does it any good effect on you? We’ll see it soon… I mean if one of your team member reach a good result… how do feel teammates for it? For me? I’m very happy that Lénár could be 3rd in the snatch and I’m going to be also get a medal, moreover a better one! Do you know who will be you main opponents? How strong is this category? I think this (60kg) category will be the “strongest” in the championship. And you still think that you can win? Our chances will be realistic only when the competition starts. How do you like the place of the competition? How is the atmosphere an the mood of the team? We’re in very good mood and we easily can feel the atmosphere of an European Championship and I feel like this mood can help me to win. Does it help for you if your own coach is with you during the competition? Yes, it can be really useful and I need for him to stand next to me. Olympic weightlifting was “well-knowed” about using of PEDs. How did it change by nowadays, what’re your thoughts about it? In my opinion I still don’t believe that every competitors compete in the clear way (without PEDs). Is it the same with in the Hungarian Team as well? No, it isn’t. I was in the training camp for long time and I exactly know what kind of medication were taken by the athletes. And were all of them authorized? Yes, all of them are authorized medicines. Attila, we wish the best for you! Thank you! How was Attila’s weight-cut? He did the weight cut easily, he was happy all the time, it didn’t indispose him. What is his bodyweight? 59,70KG; 60kg is the limit. And what will be now? We hope in a good competition and we hope that he can win this! Thank you! I would like to go for the weights as the other competitors will. I’m looking at the schedule of the attempts, to see how many attempts we have until Attila’s first. What is the plan? The plan is that, Attila should snatch the biggest weight what he can today. And after then, we will see how shape are in his opponents. We’ll see it… It’s gonna be a really big fight, two bulgarians, one soviet and one hungarian these 4 men have the chance to be the best one. You can easily see this on this table of the opening attempts. The biggest opponent is Nikolay Peshalov (BUL). Bulgarian Peshalov… the soviet Sarkisyan… but we hope that we’re going to be competitive against them, like yesterday. The biggest fight will be during the clean & jerk. After a good snatch, we’ll see our chance that time. In this case, I don’t want to predict anything, but I’m sure in one thing… we will need again for the luck! Don’t hurry, we have time! Everything is fine so far. All of us tried say to him, it’s not a bad day… he got a medal. There is no problem. During his first snatch Attila’s got an elbow injury. But it’s a great result, he got a silver medal for it. How serious is his injury? dr Imre László (doctor of the team): We can’t know it right now. But one thing is sure: we can’t look inside of the joint, but its swollen so it can’t be load for the maximum weights. We have to stop him (Attila is really want to continue the competition). He is an international level athlete, and we have long term plans with him, so we have to care to him. So has to he step back from max out in the jerk? Yes, we have to convince him, because he wants to go up until 170kg… He doesn’t cares, whatever takes he wants to compete. But we don’t want that his injury would getting more serious. Very good! Wait for me, Attila! You’re the next one Attila, prepare! head coach: Listen to Attila, what he says. president of Hungarian Weightlifting Federation (TIbor Eck): No! Attila: No, no, I’m going to lift! president: You already pushed with your arms for the jerk, they will say “no lift” for the following attempts if you do it more! Attila: I don’t care, I’m going to risk it! president: You can’t go for it Attila! Attila: But I’m going! president: You can’t! Attila: But I can! doctor: Fine, we closed this discussion. head coach: We closed it, there is an opinion and there is an other one against it. We have to decide, can he continue for his own responsibility? And what’s the bet? head coach: Silver medal… Attila: Silver medal! doctor: So what? But if your elbow is getting worse you will can’t able to compete at the Worlds! Attila: It won’t be worse! Guys, listen to me for a while. There is no 162,5kg on the bar, so we can argue calmly. He does it for sure… as I said. Then I’m not even at 3rd place… And now, he’s got eventhe silver medal in the total (Sarkisyan 130+160=290kg, Czanka 130+157,5=287,5). But if your elbow is gone, there will be no World Championship for you… You have to understand it. Are you want to ruin yourself at right now? Your dreams, our plans, everything? doctor: Attila, listen to me, after Olympics in Seoul hungarian weightlifter didn’t win medal in the total. You are the first one who did it! Is he the 2nd? No, 3rd one. Attila: “Uncle János!”
head coach: Yes? I said, I want to go for 160, not 157,5kg… head coach: And? And you putted the weight for 157,5. Attila, don’t be mad at me. You have the bronze medal Attila! Attila: I don’t care, I said it! How am I standing? You’ve become 3rd. head coach: I’m listening for our doctor, and if he says no… I apologize and congratulate for the bronze medal for you. Attila: I can’t go, I won’t. head coach: You have the right to going for the attempt as your own responsibility. Dude, decide it. doctor: We stepped back. Why are you doing this? Let’s go to dress up. Go Attila to dress up and come back, then and you’re going to get a bronze medal. head coach: …then I give the right to going for the attempt as his own responsibility doctor: But I don’t give it… that’s why I’m the doctor here. You don’t think about all eventualities. I’m sorry, but we got the bronze! Later Attila Czanka became even world record holder in the snatch with 146kg at 64kg’s category (against Naim Suleymanoglu) in 1994.
